Mathematics
Course Overview
Students will study a mixture of Pure and Applied Mathematics. In Pure Mathematics, the emphasis is on number and algebra. You will further develop the techniques you have learned at GCSE, and be introduced to new concepts such as calculus and logarithms. You will learn to move fluidly between an equation and its graphical representation.
In Applied Mathematics, you will study a mixture of Statistics and Mechanics. This will give you an understanding of the power of Mathematics to model real world situations.
Entry Requirements
To study Mathematics at A Level, you need to have achieved at least an grade 7 in Mathematics at GCSE.
You should enjoy problem solving and be confident in your use of algebra.
A Level Topics and Assessment
The Pure content is examined over two papers– any topic could come up on either paper. The third exam is a mixture of Statistics and Mechanics.
Pure topics include: Algebraic fractions; co-ordinate geometry; differentiation and integration of polynomials and other functions; the factor theorem; applications of calculus; radians; logarithms; trigonometric identities; composite and inverse functions; transformations; three dimensional vectors.
Statistics topics include: Histograms; box plots; coding of data; calculations with mean; probability distributions; linear regression
Mechanics topics include: Forces; Newton’s laws; motion with constant or variable acceleration; moments; modelling assumptions.

Beyond the Classroom and Future Prospects
Students of A Level Mathematics are supported in their studies with regular drop-in sessions that run throughout the year during the lunch period. There are also opportunities to attend extra-curricular trips, which include the UKMT Senior Team Challenge and the John Moores Maths Quiz.
A Level Mathematics requires you to think logically and analytically. As such, it is a qualification that is highly valued by employers and universities alike. It is a prerequisite for many scientific and numerical degrees.
