Health and Social Care (BTEC)
Course Overview
The BTEC Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A level. This qualification is designed to support progression to higher education for health related professions, when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC qualifications or A Levels. Grades are awarded from Distinction* to Pass.
Entry Requirements
A grade 5 in GCSE English will enable students to access this qualification. A keen interest in health and social care is essential. The BTEC will particularly suit students who wish to pursue a related discipline at university / apprenticeship. This qualification should appeal to students who prefer a mix of assignment - based work and examinations.
Topics Covered
1. Human Lifespan Development
This is an examination unit which focuses on the different stages in human development, including physical, intellectual, emotional and social development, and the factors affecting development and the effects of ageing.
2. Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
This unit is assessed through an assignment which is marked internally. You will focus on the principles and practicalities that underpin individuals' care and support needs.
3. Working in Health and Social Care
This unit will be assessed through a controlled assessment and you will study what it is like to work in this sector, developing and understanding of key responsibilities such as safeguarding, handling personal data and preventing discrimination.
4. Psychological Perspectives
This unit is assessed through an assignment which is marked internally, and you will learn about the key psychological perspectives and how they apply to Health and Social Care.
