Upton Hall School

Proud to be Tech

Upton Hall School was designated a Technology College in 2002, enabling the school to develop its excellence in the specialist subjects of Science, Mathematics, and Design and Technology.

The Technology College community plan has strengthened the school’s links with other secondary schools and enabled a wide range of activities with primary schools to be developed.

The Department of Education & Skills (see Internet contact details at bottom of right hand panel) says Technology Colleges must develop a visible and distinctive character that reflects the specialism and is embedded in the school’s culture and values.

This includes:

Upton is proud of its Specialist School status and continues to work with the Specialist Schools Trust to raise standards and widen opportunities for all learners in the community.

A range of specialisms

The Specialist Schools Programme (SSP) helps schools, in partnership with private sector sponsors and supported by additional Government funding, to establish distinctive identities through their chosen specialisms and achieve their targets to raise standards.

Specialist schools have a focus on subjects relating to their chosen specialism but must also meet the National Curriculum requirements and deliver a broad and balanced education to all pupils.

Schools can apply for specialist status from ten specialisms: arts, business & enterprise, engineering, humanities, languages, mathematics & computing, music, science, sports and technology.

Within this scope, Upton has two specialisms – Technology and Language – but through other schemes we are also an Inter-national School and a Training School, and have Sportsmark for outstanding opportunities for PE and games and Gold Artsmark, for our standard and range of work in art, drama, music and dance.
