Upton Hall School

Slovenia: Tolmin Austria : Boheimkirchen

Upton Hall School began a 3 Year Comenius School Project on the theme “Water: Source of Life and Knowledge” with a visit to one of our partner schools, Liceo Classico Statale "Giuseppe Garibaldi", La Maddalena, Sardinia in October 2006. Three teachers and two pupils from Upton went to La Maddalena. There were also teacher and pupil representatives from our other partner schools, Gimnazija Tolmin, Slovenia and Hauptschule Boheimkirchen, Austria. Our two pupils, stayed with the families of pupils from Giuseppe Garibaldi school.

Activities during the visit included water sports – sailing, swimming and snorkelling; a guided boat tour around the Archipeligo, looking at the rock formations and the history of the area and ancient legends; water sampling and testing for oxygen levels, PH values, temperature, etc. Teachers worked on creating a website at the school and planned activities for the coming year whilst pupils attended lessons.

La Maddalena is a spectacular island in the Mediterranean and the trip was a fantastic experience for all involved. Both teachers and pupils formed excellent relationships and benefited greatly from the cultural interchange .

Throughout the year schools have been involved in a series of activities. At Upton, Year 7 pupils had a series of lessons on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which involved some drama activities and creative writing. Art work was undertaken by pupils on the theme of water.
