A-LEVEL RELIGIOUS STUDIES - AQA

Introduction: Aims of the specification

The new specification is designed to encourage candidates to:

develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for, a rigorous study of religion and its relation to the wider world
treat the subject as an academic discipline by developing knowledge, understanding and skills appropriate to a specialist study of religion
adopt an enquiring, critical and reflective approach to the study of religion
reflect on and develop their own values, opinions and attitudes in the light of their learning.

Assessment Framework

The AS specification has 2 units: At AS, this specification offers an academic approach to the study of religion and is accessible to candidates of any religious persuasion or none.

In each of the two units chosen, candidates answer two structured essay questions, from a choice of four.

Written Papers: 1hr 15 mins each unit.

Weighting: Each unit accounts for 50% of the total AS marks

The A2 specification has 2 units : At A2, the specification enables candidates to study in greater depth aspects of one or more religion(s), including textual, theological, historical, ethical, phenomenological and philosophical perspectives.

Candidates answer two structured essay questions, from a choice of four.

Written Paper: 1hr 30 mins.

Weighting: Each unit accounts for 50% of total A2 marks.

Description of Teaching and Learning

The AS specification has 2 units:

Religion and Ethics 1

Utilitarianism; Situation Ethics ; Religious teaching

on the nature and value of human life.

Abortion and Euthanasia .

Religion, art and the media

The nature and purpose of religious art;

Religion,art and popular culture;

Cyber religion and TV religion

The A2 Specification has 2 units:

Religion and Ethics

Libertarianism, free will and determinism; Virtue Ethics

Life, death and beyond or
Perceptions of ultimate reality

Links to Future Careers

Religious Studies can be linked to many future careers but in particular to – Medicine; Law; Teaching; Social Work; Business Enterprise.
