Welcome to New Head Girl’s Team 2008-2009

Welcome to Hannah Graham as the new Head Girl and her team. The various members of the team have provided the following brief introduction so here is a flavour of who they are and what they are about:

Head Girl Team Aims 2008-2009

1). Communication: This means greater interaction between pupils and fully making use of the resources there are in school. It is split into two initiatives:

Their job would involve promoting the library and raising its profile within the

School. This would mean making full use of all the resources, for example A Level subject magazines. It may mean using library resources all over the school; it could also mean initiatives such as book clubs, or current affairs groups.

Their job would be to raise the profile of the Head Girl’s Team by setting up

our own section on the website with regular updates. This could also include setting up a student forum, or letters of advice or guidance. It could also be advice to next year’s Year 7.

2). Responsibility: This means giving control to the pupils so that as a school we become more united as we work together for everyone’s success. This is also split into two:

Their job would be to try and build up the links between the whole school. They could set up mentoring programmes; they may also go into forms to discuss their ideas or any issues they want to share with the school. They could also set up revision programmes, revision advice, anything to unite the school a bit more.

This job would be to set up schemes within the Sixth Form. They could be to motivate, or just to relax us. One direction could be a group of initiatives to prepare people for university, for example a cooking course, or a student with hindsight of how to manage finances. This person would have to look for time slots and speak to Mr Donovan about implementing them.

3). Environment: This would be a way to improve the school surroundings. This includes assessing and communicating all the problems of the school.

This job would involve going round classrooms and looking at the problems such as broken desks or whiteboards. It would involve talking to students and teachers about the problems they face. It could even mean looking at steps Include photo of that could be taken, such as litter duty as a punishment to keep our school nice

4). Waste: This would mean targeting the problem of waste food, paper and resources in our school that if they were managed could be prevented.

This job would mean setting up small solutions to waste, such as waste paper boxes. It could also mean a notice board where people could advertise things such as uniform, hockey sticks, revision guides or anything that they do not need anymore. This would stop waste. It may also involve discussing with dinner ladies solutions to waste problems, such as separated bins.

Goodbye and Good Luck

We say farewell and wish every success to our Head Girl, Gemma Lawlor and her team – Jenny Candiano, Victoria Kenyon, Claire Patino, Charlotte Camden and Winny Patson whose term of office 2007-2008 has just come to an end.

An extract from the minutes of the most recent School Council meeting on 23 April 2008 reflects just what a valuable contribution they have made and how this is recognised by all at Upton Hall School.

"Mrs Young then took the opportunity to thank Gemma and her team for the outstanding job they had done as this year’s Head Girl’s Team. She advised councillors that Gemma was the first Head Girl to chair a School Council. This was very much the vision for the future of School Council. It is a voice for the pupils and therefore it is appropriate that it is chaired by the Head Girl. She thanked Gemma and her team on behalf of the School Council for their enormous contribution to the success of the school. Of particular note was the impact they had made when greeting visiting speakers. She mentioned several visitors who had nothing but praise for Upton. Mrs Young told councillors that although they may not realise it at the moment, in the future the impressions that are created by them with visitors to school may be of great value. She told the meeting that you never know when you might encounter these people of influence again. She wished Gemma and her team well with their A level examinations and success for the future."
