

The study of law helps develop the learner’s analytical ability and critical thinking. It develops problem solving skills through the application of legal rules. It also gives important insight into the way society works.
AS is two units of study:
Unit 1 - LAW01 Law Making and the Legal System
50% of AS and 25% of A Level 95 marks
Externally-assessed written examination, 1 hour 30 minutes. Candidates answer three questions
Unit 2 – LAW02 The Concept of Liability (Introduction to Criminal Liability; Introduction to Contract)
50% of AS and 25% of A Level 95 marks
Externally-assessed written examination, 1 hour 30 minutes. Candidates answer two questions
A2 is two units of study:
Unit 3 – LAW03 Criminal Law (Offences against the Person)
25% of A Level 80 marks
Externally-assessed written examination, 1 hour 30 minutes. Candidates answer one three-part question
Unit 4 – LAW04 Tort, and Concepts of Law
25% of A Level 85 marks
Externally-assessed written examination, 2 hours. Candidates answer two questions
Unit 1, develops knowledge and understanding of the Legal System, together with an evaluation of its operation and performance.
Unit 2, introduces substantive law and requires simple application of aspects of criminal and civil law.
Unit 3, provides a good grounding in knowledge and evaluation of criminal law.
Unit 4, introduces law of tort, and an investigation into the concepts of law.
The study of Law at AS/A2 level provides a useful background for further study of law either as the main subject or subsidiary part of a degree or for many professional qualifications which have a law component
This subject will be introduced into the Sixth Form Curriculum in September 2008
