A-LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE & LITERATURE - AQA (SPEC B)

Introduction: Aims of the specification

English Language and Literature aims to combine the best of the two disciplines. It includes strong creative writing elements as well as study of a range of texts, both literary and non-literary.

Assessment Framework

Two coursework units, one in AS, one in A2.

Two examined units including a Shakespeare play.

Unit 1: Approaches, an anthology of texts, one-hour open book exam. Pupils will study a writer’s use of language and attitudes.

Unit 2: Coursework: 2 pieces, one analytical on two novels, one creative. A short transcript will be used as stimulus for their own play and commentary.

Unit 3: Pupils will read and be examined on one play, examining speech in the modes of drama

Unit 4: Assessment will be by the production of a coursework folder that includes a transformed text and a commentary.

Description of Teaching and Learning:

Teaching at A Level is designed to be interactive and will encourage independent practical skills. The coursework will teach redrafting skills, encouraging pupils to respond as professionals. Texts are studied through a variety of theoretical and literary approaches. Examination practice and skills are taught explicitly throughout the course. Enrichment, through theatre strips, is provided if appropriate performances are available.
