Upton Hall School

The Uptonian

November 2007

The Uptonian has been the school magazine for about the last fifty years. A prize for the person with the oldest copy! It was re-launched in 1997 but during the last ten years the extensive building and renovation programme together with the changes to the curriculum and applications for specialist status have led to it being published sporadically rather than annually.

To mark the launch of our new web-site and in response to requests from former pupils The Uptonian appears again. It can be read on-line or for those who prefer to read paper a copy can be ordered from School.

The November 2007 edition of the magazine will cover school events that took place during the academic year 2006-2007. We hope that current pupils and their families will regard it as a record of a busy school year and that former pupils and staff and friends of the school will see it as a way of keeping in touch with the latest developments.

My thanks to pupils, staff and parents who have made 2006-2007 such a successful year for Upton Hall School and good luck to former pupils who we hope will enjoy sharing in that success.

Holt Building Opens

Cherie Blair, wife of the former British Prime Minister and, known professionally as Cherie Booth QC , a prominent barrister, formally named and opened the Holt Building on 19 September 2006.

Named in tribute to the other Wirral FCJ school, Holt Hill Convent in Birkenhead which closed in the 1970s, the Holt Building houses maths, religious education, art, and design and technology. It also provides a spacious reception area.

Mrs Blair undertook this task of opening the building very graciously and spoke about the importance of education for women.

It was a delight to have two former pupils of Holt Hill, Sisters Victoire and Carmel, at the event

As usual, it was the girls who stole the show. Good manners and courteous attention to our visitors were noted and appreciated.

The presentations on the recent trip to Russia, newly acquired Healthy School status and a superb presentation by former pupil, Katie Patterson, on her gap year experiences helping the FCJs in South America made us all very proud.
